Lenovo Thinkpad has no sound out os speakers, but headphones work

Solution

Download and install latest "Hotkey Features Integration" by Lenovo at https://support.lenovo.com/ca/en/downloads/ds031814.

Then F1, F2 and F3 work as intentioned. This also enables the laptop speakers to function as well.
